B.Tech Civil Engineering - An Overview

BTech Civil Engineering Student on Construction Site

B.Tech. Civil Engineering program at Baba Farid College of Engineering and Technology is excellently suited to meet the ever-changing requirements of engineers with courses that combine the study of Materials, Mechanics Surveying, Design & construction, Statistical Analysis, and computational techniques with engineering. In addition, undergraduates are exposed to the concepts of design including the application of computer-aided design (CAD) techniques. The program also considers the need for real-world exercise which is why throughout the program time to time it entails field camps, Live projects, and a host of hand-on-practice based assignments that give students an opportunity to apply their theoretical concept & knowledge to problems faced on the ground.

What is Civil Engineering?

It is everything you see that’s been built around us. It’s about road and railways, bridges, shopping mall, schools/colleges, offices, hospitals, water and power supply and everything you see built around. The kinds of things we take for granted but would find life very hard to live without. The term “Civil” means “relating to citizen or people”. It is one of the oldest engineering disciplines and scope of civil engineering remains ever growing. The term was first used in the 18th century to distinguish the newly recognized profession from military engineering, until then preeminent.

B.Tech Civil Engineering Program Overview

A branch of engineering that encompasses the conception, design, construction, and management of diverse structures built to maintain or improve the quality of life and to control the environment. Civil engineering graduates design, create and connect the world around us. They help make our parishes, townships and metropolises work for the people that live there. Civil engineers include planning and design professionals in both the public and private sectors: contractors, builders, educators, and researchers. Guiding principles of sound civil engineering practice are that projects should be built economically; that they should conserve energy; that their construction should be hazard-free; and that in keeping with governmental regulations and statutes, they should provide healthful, safe, and environmentally sound use by society.

Required Skill Set for B.Tech in Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is arguably one of the world’s oldest fields of study. From bridge design to water treatment, the work of Civil Engineers has a daily impact on the lives of most people in the world. We can, therefore, see how important it is for Civil Engineers to possess certain qualities and skills. Here are uncommon skills that aspiring Civil Engineers develop at BFCET. Which markes BFCET best engineering college in punjab, North India.

  • Technical Skills - A good Civil Engineer should have a level of Mathematics and Physics that allows for the identification and solving of engineering problems.
  • Project Management - When problems arise, it is common for people involved in the project on all levels to look to the engineer for guidance and resolution. It is important that a Civil Engineer is able to step up to the task and manage a diverse team of professionals whilst maintaining the confidence of clients.
  • Communication Skills - In Civil Engineering-perhaps more so than other Engineering fields - the ability to communicate effectively is a highly sought-after skill. Whether dealing with Management or a client, Engineers need to be able to clearly communicate ideas and give direction leaving no ambiguity. They must also be able to listen and benefit from the ideas of others in the team.
  • Creativity - It could be said broadly that the role of Civil Engineers is applying Engineering principles to develop solutions within the built environment. More often than not, this requires a certain level of creativity. Engineers need to be able to innovate and improve solutions. From finding ways to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions or making a trampoline bridge, creativity is the key.
  • Critical Thinking - Civil Engineers often face complex problems and need to find efficient solutions for them. They need to be able to assess the pros and cons of all possible solutions, and they need to be decisive in order to choose the best one.
  • Leadership Skills - The responsibility for the outcomes of projects falls on the civil engineers who manage them. Therefore, it is important that managers have significant leadership skills when overseeing planners, technicians, technologists, surveyors, and contractors. This involves being able to plan and prioritize, manage time effectively, delegate duties when necessary, make decisions with confidence and authority, and motivate members of the team.
  • Problem-Solving - Analytical skills are vital. During the different stages of a project, such as planning and construction, engineers will encounter a number of variables that will influence the outcome or hold up the progress of a project. This is when engineers need to harness their skills, education, and experience in order to find safe and cost-effective solutions to the issues that arise while keeping the project on track.
