School of Skill Development

The quality of technical education largely depends upon how well an Institution upgrades and aligns itself with the ever changing world of Technology. The foundation of these technological updates comes from the underlying and deep rooted research that an institution does to scale up and meet the standards of industry in all respects. From infrastructural development to student and faculty development it takes a considerable amount of time, effort, energy and resources to build the learning eco-system that is technically relevant in this era of fourth Industrial revolution. This is primarily the reason why many colleges are struggling today and are at the verge of closure.

At Baba Farid Group of Institutions we are constantly taking considerable steps to ensure that we keep ourselves most updated with the latest trends and technologies. School of Skill development is one such example that defines our readiness towards the world of work. In last three years ever since we have established School of Skill Development, we have done numerous activities that have helped us in building the skill ecosystem in our Engineering College. Three years back, we’ve taken the challenge of changing the conventional system of education by introducing skill based and industry oriented education to produce industry ready Engineers, and today we can proudly say that this extra-ordinary initiative that we took in the form setting up of School of Skill Development has now started showing the results.

While we move through this important transition phase, it’s imperative for us to share the gist of our journey so far. We started our journey of School of Skill Development with small incremental steps but with a big vision. We fundamentally knew the importance of taking everyone on the same page and pace, so we started our skilling journey through the sensitization phase where number of workshops on Skill Development were organized for faculty and students in association with some of the top industries, educational institutions and Skill Development Institutions. Some of the participating institutions in this sensitization phase included Trident, Indo-Swiss Training Centre, National Institute of Technical Teacher Training and Research, BOSCH, National Skill Development Corporation and so on.

As an output of these sensitization workshops, we were able to form a core technical team of experts very well trained by industry people. This core team took the journey to the next level by organizing the three consecutive Skill Competitions of World Skills fame back to back in last three years in association with National Skill Development Corporation and top multinational organizations like FESTO, Autodesk, NTTF etc. As a result, students of BFGI started getting recognized nationally for their Skill Competencies and 10 of our students participated in CII National Competitions Bangalore after competing and winning at state and regional level in Punjab and North India.

While these competitions and workshops helped us in building the skill eco-system on one hand, on the other hand our team of Technical Heads took the journey to the next level by working with top multi-national companies for infrastructural development and setting up the Centre of Excellences as a part of School of Skill Development. Number of companies have been approached in this regards to set up the Centre of Excellences including top German and Japanese companies like BOSCH, FESTO, Siemens, Festech, Mistubishi, Janatics, SMC, Alen Bradley, Rockwell, Christiani Sharpline, Kuka Robotics, Omron, MTAB and so on. Many other alternative proposals are also being explored where we are approaching and in talking terms with the companies to jointly invest in Skill Development through our respective CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) budgets. Number of other parallel activities like visit to top notch educational institutions (including BITS, IIT’s, CV Raman, AKGEC Gaziabad, Indo-Swiss), working with Punjab Skill Development Mission as knowledge and skill partner for organizing regional and state level competitions for World Skills Russia 2019 have been happening to keep the momentum on the top.

The ultimate goal behind all these skill development activities is to give students every possible opportunity to get skilled and get selected in their dream companies at their dream jobs. We are hoping that as we move along with the above mentioned steps, we will certainly make our students and their parents feel proud about studying in the best institutions of the region and the country.
